Your Essential Guide to a Simple Yet Memorable Day

In Australia, registry weddings are an increasingly popular choice for couples seeking a simple, meaningful, and budget-friendly way to say "I do." Whether you're planning a low-key celebration, saving for a bigger party later, or just want to avoid the stress of a large wedding, a registry-style ceremony is a beautiful option.

But just because it's simpler, doesn't mean it should be less special. With the right preparation, a registry wedding can still be personal, stylish, and unforgettable. Here's your complete guide to navigating a registry-style wedding in Australia.

What Is a Registry-Style Wedding?

A registry-style wedding is a civil marriage ceremony conducted by a government-authorised celebrant, such as at iDO Celebrants Office or at a Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM) office in your state or territory. It's a legally binding marriage ceremony, often with a shorter format and fewer guests than a traditional wedding.

Step-by-Step: How to Plan Your Registry Wedding in Australia

1

Give Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM)

You must lodge a Notice of Intended Marriage form at least 1 month before the ceremony. It is valid for up to 18 months. Forms can be lodged in person or remotely. You'll need original documents: passport or birth certificate, and proof of divorce/death if previously married.

2

Choose Your Registry Office

You may choose to be solemnised at our iDO Celebrants Office or at any of the Australian state's BDM office: - NSW: NSW Registry of Births, Deaths & Marriages - VIC: Victorian Registry of Births, Deaths & Marriages - QLD: Queensland Registry (And similar for WA, SA, TAS, NT, and ACT)

3

Pick a Date and Package

Our iDO Celebrants Office offers various ceremony packages, ranging from weekday to weekend experiences, with the celebrant, or with extras like professional photos, music, décor and reception. Please discuss the options when selecting.

What to Wear to a Registry Wedding?

Just because it's a registry wedding doesn't mean you can't look amazing. The vibe is often more relaxed, but many couples still go all out.

4

Include Family or Cultural Traditions

You can still include a small nod to your heritage or family customs before or after the ceremony.

Celebrating After the Ceremony

  • Book a restaurant: Many couples book a private lunch or dinner with close friends/family.
  • Have a mini reception: Host a backyard celebration or casual gathering at home.
  • Cut a cake & pop champagne: Small touches can create meaningful memories.

Guests & Witnesses

You need 2 witnesses over the age of 18 (they can be family or friends). Guest numbers are often limited—check with your registry-style office (ranges from 2 to 20 people depending on package). At iDO Celebrants, we offer up to 30 people.

Extra Tips and Tricks

  • Arrive early: At least 20–30 minutes early to check in and settle nerves.
  • Double-check documents: Original ID, NOIM receipt, and any required paperwork.
  • Plan ahead for photos, weather, and transport.
  • Add a livestream or Zoom for overseas loved ones.

Final Thought

A registry wedding is more than just paperwork, it's your official start together, and it deserves to feel just as joyful and significant as any other wedding. With a little thought and intention, your day can be intimate, meaningful, and stylishly you.
